The Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA) is proud to announce that three exceptional Alberta youth were selected to receive AQHA International Travel Grants to attend the 2025 Youth Excellence Seminar (YES), taking place July 8–10 in Amarillo, Texas. The recipients—Reese Stone, Megan Waugh, and Briella Schroeder—will represent Canadian youth on the international stage, gaining valuable leadership skills and connecting with fellow members of the American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA).

Funded through AQHA International, the YES Travel Grant is designed to assist international youth members in attending this signature leadership event. The program covers travel-related expenses such as airfare, hotel accommodations, and registration. Only eight youth from AQHA’s global affiliates were awarded this grant in 2025, making this a significant honour for Canada.

Sixteen-year-old Reese Stone of central Alberta lives on a working cattle and grain farm, where Quarter Horses are part of everyday life. An active member of both 4-H Beef and Horse clubs, Reese is passionate about horsemanship and competes in junior rodeos, horse shows, and cattle events. She rides in both Western and English disciplines, and outside of the barn, enjoys curling and painting portraits of her horses.

Also 16, Megan Waugh hails from Fort McMurray, Alberta. She owns and competes with two Quarter Horses, Benny (My Radical Dimension) and Alice (Lets Gets Southern). Megan is eager to bring back ideas and experiences that can help grow the Canadian Quarter Horse community. Megan will be campaigning while at the conference to become a director for AQHYA’s International affiliates under the Region 11 banner.

Thirteen-year-old Briella Schroeder, from Leduc, Alberta, balances a high academic standing in French Immersion with her equestrian pursuits. A committed AQHYA and 4-H member, Briella recently competed with her 19-year-old mare Delightfully Dressed at the L1 West Championships in Las Vegas. Her enthusiasm for learning and advocacy for youth programming are hallmarks of her commitment to the industry.

The Youth Excellence Seminar is one of AQHA’s flagship youth leadership programs, offering workshops in personal development, team building, and industry advocacy. Through this experience, these three young Canadians will grow as ambassadors for AQHYA and CQHA, while building lifelong connections with peers from across the world.

CQHA 1st Vice President Laurie Haughton, who has long supported youth development through AQHA leadership channels, shared her perspective on the significance of this experience:

2024 AQHA Canadian Racehorse of the Year Wins 2025 Ontario Bred Derby

The Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA) is proud to celebrate a historic week for Canadian-bred racehorses as Had To Be Fabulous secures two monumental honours on July 2, 2025.

The standout filly claimed victory in the 14th edition of the Ontario Bred Derby at 300 yards and was also named AQHA’s 2024 Canadian Racehorse of the Year—officially placing her in contention for the prestigious AQHA Racehorse of the Year title.

“Fabby,” as she is affectionately known, was bred and is owned by CQHA’s 2023 Racehorse Breeders of the Year, Carole and Jaime Robertson, and is trained by CQHA’s 2022 AQHA Canadian Trainer of the Year, Bryn Robertson. She is a half-sister to CQHA’s 2024 Canadian Horse of the Year, Had To Be Ivory—making her pedigree as powerful as her presence on the track.

This undefeated filly is turning heads with eight wins from nine career starts. Her Ontario Bred Derby Trial saw her cruise to victory by 1¾ lengths with a 92 speed index, and her flawless follow-up win in the finals confirms her as one of the most dominant young Quarter Horses in the sport today. Ridden by Ismael Mosqueira, Had To Be Fabulous drew post one in the Derby final and did not disappoint.

As Quarter Horse racing continues to grow in popularity and prestige across Canada, days like this show the depth of talent and commitment within our breeding and racing communities.

The Twilight Race Card at Ajax Downs on July 2 also featured the exciting Battle of the Breeds, where top Quarter Horse mare Jess a Deal took on Thoroughbreds in a 770-yard showdown—another thrilling highlight in a stacked eight-race evening.

With quiet determination and trademark grit, jockey Brian Bell guided Maryland Magic to the wire, securing the 800th victory of his career in the last race at Ajax Downs on Sunday June 15, 2025—a milestone that places him squarely as the most accomplished Quarter Horse jockey in Canadian history!

Bell, who got his start in 2001 at the historic Picov Downs “J-track”, has spent nearly a quarter century building a reputation defined by consistency, humility, and excellence. Unlike riders in the U.S. who compete year-round, Canadian jockeys work with a much smaller race calendar. Bell has averaged 20 to 40 racing days per year — and yet, over the span of two decades, he has quietly and steadily accumulated a win record unmatched in Canadian Quarter Horse racing.

“It was a rough start to the day,” said Bell, reflecting on his milestone win. “Maryland Magic was my last shot—and he came through for me.”

The 11-year-old stakes winner, trained by Jason Pascoe and owned by Milena Kwiecien, has been a consistent partner for Bell in recent seasons. Their win Sunday marked the third straight for Maryland Magic this year — all with Bell in the saddle.

Bell’s family — including his mother Diane, who made the long trip from Sarnia — was on hand to witness the achievement, as were dozens of fellow riders, trainers, and long-time fans. His partner, Katie Browne, is a fixture at the track in her own right as Ajax Downs’ head outrider. The couple share two sons, and Sunday’s milestone was as much a family affair as it was a professional triumph.

Bell’s career has been defined by something rare in horse racing: longevity and steady dominance without flash or fanfare. Since his first win aboard Mr. Ordinary Joe on July 1, 2001, Bell has been a mainstay atop the Canadian Quarter Horse leaderboard. He has won multiple High Point Jockey titles, consistently rides for top barns, and has been trusted with some of the best horses in the country.

In a sport where opportunity is often limited by geography and schedule, Bell has made the most of every mount. His 800 wins have been earned not through volume, but through precision and perseverance — a testament to both his skill and his work ethic.

It’s a record that places him well above any other active Quarter Horse jockey in Canada, and while comparisons to American legends like G.R. Carter may not be apples-to-apples, Bell’s contributions to Canadian racing are every bit as meaningful.

As the dust settles on win number 800, Bell shows no signs of slowing down. With horses like Maryland Magic and CQHA’s 2024 Horse of the Year Had to Be Ivory still in his corner — and a deep bench of loyal trainers and owners — there’s every reason to believe more milestones lie ahead.

But even if he never rode another race, Brian Bell’s place in Canadian Quarter Horse history is secure. He’s not just the winningest jockey in the country — he’s the kind of rider every young apprentice would be wise to emulate: steady, skilled, and grounded in the love of the sport.

AQHA Executive Committee Approves Animal Welfare Rules

The AQHA Animal Welfare Commission met during the 2025 AQHA Convention in March in Las Vegas and made several welfare-related recommendations to the AQHA Executive Committee. At its May meeting, the Executive Committee reviewed the Animal Welfare Commission’s recommendations. As a result of such review, the Executive Committee approved the following to be implemented immediately:

To form a task force to develop and implement a plan to expand performance alteration testing to appropriate shows throughout the year.
To continue performance alteration testing at AQHA Championship shows.
To implement the voluntary use of ISO compliant (15-digit) microchips or additional forms of permanent identification of horses at 2026 AQHA Championship Shows. To require in 2027 that all horses entering an AQHA Championship Show be microchipped or identified with another form of permanent identification for the purposes of testing and biosecurity.
To keep the World Show Vaccination/Biosecurity/Identification Task Force in place to develop a biosecurity plan for AQHA Championship Shows.
To recommend that no horse may be treated with Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) within the 24 hours prior to competition with the following requirements:
- ESWT must be administered by licensed veterinarian within such state or with a written prescription by a licensed veterinarian that has a valid Client-Patient-Veterinarian relationship.
- AQHA Medication Report Form must be filed within one hour of administration on each case per AQHA Rule VIO403.
- A log must be kept by the administering party documenting date, total number of shocks per anatomical region and the horse’s registered name and number.
- ESWT application to the back and dorsal pelvis area may be administered by licensed veterinarian within such state or with a written prescription by a licensed veterinarian that has a valid Client-Patient-Veterinarian relationship within the 24-hour prohibited period, but no closer than 12 hours prior to competing. If sedation is required, it must be administered 24 hours prior to competition by a licensed veterinarian and will be considered therapeutic and a Medication Report Form (MRF) must be filed, per AQHA Rule VIO403.
- This rule will go into effect January 1, 2026.
To recommend that a participant may be subject to penalty for the inhumane treatment of an American Quarter Horse that occurs somewhere other than at or in connection with an AQHA-approved show. This applies internationally, as well. Anyone reporting a violation must be acting in good faith and have reasonable grounds for believing the information disclosed is a violation. Any allegations that prove to have been made maliciously or knowingly to be false will be viewed as a serious disciplinary offense and will be considered a violation of this rule, subjecting the reporting party to penalty by AQHA.

About the Animal Welfare Commission

The AQHA Animal Welfare Commission, which was created by the AQHA Executive Committee in 2012, reports directly to the Executive Committee, which evaluates all proposals in relation to the current state of the industry. The Animal Welfare Commission serves as AQHA’s primary body for rules, policies and procedures related to all areas of animal welfare. In addition, the commission oversees the educational processes associated with AQHA officials responsible for animal welfare.

The Animal Welfare Commission’s mission is to provide a framework for its members to 1.) Identify issues negatively affecting the welfare of the American Quarter Horse, 2.) Stay current on all animal welfare issues and 3.) Recommend actions that will help protect the American Quarter Horse from inhumane practices and AQHA and its members from the negative impacts associated with those practices. The AQHA Animal Welfare Commission, in an effort to do right by the horse, will share discussion, action items and recommendations with the Association’s alliance partners. AQHA’s prohibition against inhumane treatment applies to AQHA members and nonmembers.

In Memory of Ian MacRae

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ian MacRae, a lifelong rancher, respected breeder, and pioneer in the Canadian Quarter Horse and cutting horse industries. Ian passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by family and friends who cherished him.

Born and raised in Hardisty, Alberta, Ian spent his life immersed in the world of ranching, where his love for the land and animals shaped everything he did. Since 1965, Ian bred and registered over 300 American Quarter Horses, and his dedication to the breed earned him the esteemed recognition of a 50-Year Cumulative Breeder by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in 2021. Through his breeding program, notable horses like King Leo Bar, Roosters Joe, Diamond Dan Dee, and Quixote Doc helped define his operation’s success and contributed significantly to the growth of the Quarter Horse community in Canada.

Ian’s work wasn’t just confined to the ranch. As a passionate advocate for the cutting horse, he proudly represented Canada at the 1964 Royal Windsor Horse Show in the United Kingdom, where he and fellow Canadian horsemen demonstrated the precision and skill of the cutting horse before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This historic moment highlighted the global appreciation for Canadian horsemanship and left a lasting impression on the equestrian world. Ian’s contributions to the cutting horse community were also felt internationally, with his demonstrations further promoting the discipline abroad.

Throughout his life, Ian’s work was built on a foundation of hard work, integrity, and a profound respect for the traditions handed down through generations. His legacy extends far beyond the horses he bred; it is embedded in the values he instilled in those who had the privilege to learn from him. From teaching his family how to break a colt to guiding fellow ranchers in the art of ranching, Ian was a steadfast mentor who showed us all the meaning of dedication and perseverance.

Ian is survived by his beloved family, including his children Stevie MacRae (Brock, Phoenix), Mackenzie MacRae (Evan, Odin, Lily), James MacRae (Zana, Weston), Josh MacRae (Haylee, Havanna), Bill Dyer (Yvonne, Christopher, Kimberly), and Allan Dyer (Lourdes, Jackie, Thomas), all of whom continue to carry his values and love for the land. His legacy lives on in the pastures he worked, the animals he cared for, and the countless lives he touched along the way.

Predeceased by his parents John and Mary MacRae, his sister Morag Morris, and his daughter Mary MacRae, Ian’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him.

A memorial service to celebrate Ian’s life and legacy was held on May 23, 2025, at the Hardisty Community Hall. Donations to honour his life may be made to the local 4H club, the Hardisty cemetery, or a charity of your choice, honoring Ian’s lifelong commitment to rural life and the stewardship of the land.

Ian MacRae’s boots may now be empty, but his footprint remains deeply imprinted in the ranching and equine communities. His contributions to the Quarter Horse industry and his dedication to the preservation of Canadian horsemanship will be remembered for generations to come.

Chomping at the Bit: Quarter Horse Racing Is Back at Ajax Downs, May 7

AJAX DOWNS, MAY 6, 2025 – The long winter break is over and the fastest breed of equine, the Quarter Horses, are back for another exciting racing season at Ajax Downs this Wednesday, May 7. The first of 25 race dates gets underway with a seven-race card and a first race post time of 1:45 p.m.

Throughout the season, racing fans can enjoy top class Quarter Horse racing as well as special event Sundays once a month during the summer beginning with a Father’s Day celebration on June 15. In addition to other event days such as Craft Beer day and Family Fun Day, Ajax will host its first Twilight Racing Day on July 2 featuring a 4:15 first race post time.

The popular Battle of the Breeds races, pitting Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in a ‘hook race (around a turn) will be back too. Last year the Thoroughbreds won four of the races to three won by Quarter Horses.

Bob Broadstock, the president of the Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario, Inc. and a leading trainer, is encouraged by the number of entries for the opening day card.

“From the moment the track opened for training it was very busy,” said Broadstock. “We had a tough winter and horsepeople were excited to get their horses back in training.”

The QROOI implemented a horse purchase loan program a couple of years ago and it increased for the 2025 racing season.

“A lot of people took advantage of the loan program, double the number from a year ago,” said Broadstock. “People may need some help investing in their first horse, that is what we are trying to do.”

Evidence of the success of the loan program can be seen right off the bat in the two Trials for the QROOI Open Derby for 3-year-olds as eight of the 15 entrants in the 300-yard dashes were purchased during the off season.

The first Trial is race two and Ontario bred ELVIS THE FAMOUS will be a popular runner with the fans. The light grey gelding won the Ontario Bred Futurity last season for the top stable of Carol and Jaime Robertson. Elvis the Famous will be ridden by Ismael Mosquiera, who is returning to riding after being sidelined since July due to injury.

Race three is the second Trial and last year’s High Point 2-year-old filly HAD TO BE FABULOUS, also owned by the Robertsons, meets stakes winner Runaway Fate and others in a competitive dash. The final of the QROOI Derby, worth $30,000, is on May 21.

Maritime QHA Youth Welcome Educational Opportunity

The Maritime Quarter Horse Youth Association hosted a successful clinic April 25th to 27th at the Princess Louise Show Park located in Sussex, NB. CQHA was proud to help support this educational event featuring AQHA Professional Horseman and Judge Derek Hanscome.

MQHA youth advisor Lacey Fisher said of the event “the kids were incredibly engaged and learned so much. We are so grateful for Derek’s time, expertise, and support of our youth program!”
