As the Shannon Burwash Memorial Scholarship Awards for Equine and AgriculturalnStudies mark their tenth year, we are excited to announce a big change that will provide more meaningful financial support to students.
In April 2014, to honor the legacy of his wife Shannon’s love for the horse and her contribution to the horse industry, Dr. Wayne Burwash established the Shannon Burwash Memorial Fund for Equine & Agricultural Studies at Calgary Foundation to launch and support the Shannon Burwash Memorial Awards for Equine and Agricultural Studies.
Since the first awards were announced in 2015, $43,000 has been awarded to
31 students across Canada.
In past years, awards of $1,000 and $2,000 each were awarded annually to three to four recipients, supporting students just beginning their studies up to those pursuing graduate
level and DVM programs. However, in consideration of the rising costs of higher education — and to have more of an impact on students’ lives and better achieve the Fund’s goals — we are revising the structure.
Going forward, at least two awards of a minimum $5,000 each will be distributed annually to students in more advanced studies. “In addition to honoring Shannon’s legacy and love for horses, the scholarship’s prime
goal is to encourage ‘horsey’ students to pursue a post-secondary education.
For the horse industry to grow and thrive, it needs leaders who are well educated,” says Dr. Burwash. “I am proud to say we are seeing early recipients of the awards becoming the
leaders we had hoped for. With these new changes, we can support future leaders in a more significant way.”
