2023 Shannon Burwash Memorial Fund Scholarship Recipients

Shannon Burwash was a leader and a lover of the horse industry across Canada. These scholarships are awarded to deserving students who are focused on getting a post-secondary education and becoming involved in the horse industry in their future.

Katherine Moyes of Alberta, recipient of a $2000 Leadership Award

KATHERINE MOYES is currently in her third year studying Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. Last summer, she worked in a research lab at the University of Calgary focusing on horse parasitology in Alberta. Post- graduation, Katie aims to continue her research, especially in equine-related studies. Horses have been Katie’s lifelong passion, with her family owning and raising horses ever since she was born. Katie has been riding horses since age 3 and started competing regularly in Reining at age 7.

After years of hard work and dedication, she had the opportunity to compete in the North American Affiliate Championships in Oklahoma City in November 2022. Her involvement in Reining Alberta has been ongoing, and she aspires to take on executive leadership roles within the organization in the future.

Katie plans to turn her love for horses into a career, embracing the equine industry with enthusiasm and dedication.

Kaitlyn Busson of Ontario, recipient of a $2000 Leadership Award

KAITLYN BUSSON is entering her second year in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at the University of Calgary.

Prior to starting this degree she spent two years working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Bio-veterinary Science and Equine Science at Dalhousie University.

Busson proudly calls Elmworth, Alberta home, and grew up on a small family farm and spent six years competing in High School Rodeo, having many opportunities to compete at both the national and international level. Breakaway roping is the rodeo event that she is most passionate about and enjoys competing in this event when time permits. Horses have been a large part of my Busson’s life, even outside of the arena. Growing up she also earned to appreciate horses while using them on the farm and doing lots of trail riding with her family and friends.

“I have had the unique opportunity to work with horses in the equine hospital that I work at and as part of my academic courses. My relationship with horses and role in the equine industry has greatly influenced my decision to attend a veterinary medicine program and my desire to continue working with horses throughout my career.”

Anabelle Menard of Ontario, recipient of a $1,000 Encouragement Award

ANABELLE MENARD Is a first-year student at the University of Guelph, and is honoured to be a recipient of Shannon Burwash’s scholarship award. From a young age, she has been fascinated with horses, and has strived to achieve goals that would lead to a career in the horse industry. Menard began taking riding lessons at 8 years old and started volunteering at a barn when she was 11 ears old. Eventually she started working as a stable hand, trail guide and camp leader. In 2020, she began working at dressage barn teaching low-level dressage to beginners, and facilitating therapeutic riding lessons. She has completed her Equestrian Canada rider levels 1 through 6 and hopes to one day earn instructor certification.

Menard’s focus has been primarily on dressage, but has taken up western riding, with an interest specifically in barrel racing. Having competed in both disciplines over the years, she finds enjoyment in the show ring no matter what saddle she is sitting in. Horses are her true passion, but she also shares that she is passionate about music and taught piano and singing for five years at a music school in her hometown.

Maggie Fraser of Alberta, recipient of a $1,000 Encouragement Award

MAGGIE FRASER is entering her first year at the University of Alberta to study for a Bachelor of Science in Animal Health – Food Animals. Her ultimate goal is to be accepted into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary and to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) specializing in equine and large animals.

Fraser’s passion has always been riding; she has been riding for over twelve years, with experience in English and Western riding. She has competed in numerous hunter shows and gymkhanas. She was an active member of the DeWinton Pony Club for eight years and loved working as a mentor with the club’s junior members.

Maggie was employed for two summers as an Animal health intern and Polo Groom through Careers Next Generation. Maggie states, “I have been lucky enough to be employed by Revas Polo Ranch for the last two summers, working 40+ hours a week with horse fitness, tack and barn maintenance, and primary medical care, where I expanded my knowledge and skill level. I got to work for and with extremely talented equine specialists, which was an invaluable experience.” She has also played competitive volleyball for the past four years and coached with the youth recreational leagues for her club team. She is thrilled to be accepted as one of the recipients of the Shannon Burwash Memorial Scholarship recipients.

Canadian Bred Horse Wins AQHA’s Inaugural Pro Rodeo Pickup Horse of the Year Award

Every year, the AQHA bestows the prestigious Nutrena Horse of the Year Awards upon the top horses in Pro Rodeo. While these awards have traditionally favored timed event horses, a new category has been introduced this year to shine the spotlight on the unsung heroes of rodeo: the Pickup Man’s Horse. These horses play a vital role in supporting pickup men during rodeo events, ensuring the safety of both riders and livestock.

The winners of this inaugural category have recently been announced. Canadian bred Baby Hes Hot, affectionately known as “Baby,” ridden and owned by Calgary Stampede Ranch Manager Tyler Kraft, claimed the first-place award.

“Baby” is by Hes Hot N Chexy Baby out of Vaniz Baby Boots, both owned by Doug Wilkinson. Prior to being purchased by the Krafts, “Baby” was born, raised, and trained on the Wilkinson Ranch in Mossleigh, AB.

Additionally pickup man and owner Tyler Kraft has been selected to be one of the pickup men at the 2023 Wrangler National Rodeo Finals taking place will take place December 7-16 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV.

Oh behalf of the CQHA community we congratulate Tyler, and “Baby’s” breeder Doug Wilkinson.

Picov Family Unveils Memorial Bench and Plaque at Ajax Downs

Families cram Ajax Downs for Family Fun Day and Norman Picov is Remembered

A commemorative bench and plaque were unveiled at Ajax Downs, beside the walking ring, for Norman Picov, one of the founding fathers of Quarter Horse Racing in Ontario
Barry and Robin Picov at the memorial bench for Barry's father Norman
A J greeted kids at the track!
AJAX DOWNS AUGUST 27, 2023 – The two things most dear to the late Norman Picov were family and horses. His Ajax Downs held its annual Family Fun Day in support of the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation on Sunday, August 27 and the event was yet again a rousing success. On a picture-perfect summer Sunday, Ajax Downs was filled to the rafters with families who enjoyed dozens of fun activities and got up close to the Quarter Horses racing during the afternoon.

It was also a fitting day for the Picov family to unveil a memorial bench and plaque for Norman, adjacent to the walking ring on the track apron. Norman passed away in February.

“Norm was a visionary horseman, who, along with our grandfather Alex and our mom Linda. dared to dream and embark on a journey that turned into a reality,” said Barry Picov, one of Norman’s sons. “In 1969, the seeds of Picov Downs were sown… It was a dream rooted in the simple idea of bringing people together to enjoy all that he believed in. Picov Downs, bourne for this vision, emerged where families could come together.
This bench stands as a symbol of his enduring presence. It is meant to be occupied just as Norman sat here and enjoyed conversations with all of you.”

While kids of all ages enjoyed games, live entertainment, exotic animals, and a variety of treats, on the track the racing was fast and furious. The featured race of the day, an allowance race for some of the top 3-year-olds in the country, was seemingly won by the current leader of the division Snow Moose but the Ontario bred gelding was disqualified as the stewards deemed him to be guilty of interference. Placed first in the 350-yard race, which was serving as a prep for the $50,000 Norman Picov Derby next month, was SOUR CANDY, who was recently purchased by Craig Spada and Rick Crispi. Trained by Lauren Spada and ridden by Alexis Sanchez, Sour Candy was one of two winners for his team of owners, trainer and jockey on the afternoon.

2023 Shannon Burwash Memorial Awards  for Equine and Agricultural Studies

Apply by midnight, June 1st, 2023

April 1, 2023 – (Calgary, AB) – In May of 2014, Dr. Wayne Burwash launched the Shannon Burwash Memorial Fund for Equine and Agricultural Studies at Calgary Foundation, to honor the legacy of his wife Shannon’s love for the horse and her contribution to the horse industry.

To build this fund, Dr. Burwash offered to match all donations, dollar for dollar, until the fund reached the target goal of $125,000. It was thought that this size of investment should be enough to generate $4000 to $5000 annually to be awarded as scholarships. The Fund at the Calgary Foundation has reached nearly $140,000 and is generating enough to continue awarding $4000 per year. To date there has been $31,000 awarded from this fund to 23 students from coast to coast in Canada.

However, each year the number of very worthy scholarship applications received far exceeds funds available for distribution, and the cost of higher education continues to rise. One of the most impactful ways to address this challenge is funding student awards. Gifts to the scholarship fund are invested, not spent, to generate an income which is used to award scholarships. Your support is an investment in the future of our horse industry as deserving students develop into the leaders of tomorrow.

Awards Overview: For 2023 there will be three student awards:

  • one award of $2,000 for full-time students entering more advanced years of study (third year and beyond) in any field of study with emphasis on horses, agriculture, agribusiness, animal health technology, or equine veterinary medicine at an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution. Click here to learn more.
  • two awards of $1,000 for full-time students entering first or second year of study at an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution in any field of study with emphasis on horses, agriculture, agri-business, animal health technology or equine veterinary medicine. Click here to learn more.

To apply, all students must visit the Calgary Foundation website at either of the underlined “Click here” links indicated above.

AQHA Hires Director of International Activities

The world’s largest equine breed registry hires Tate Eck as the AQHA director of international activities.

The American Quarter Horse Association is pleased to announce that Tate Eck has been named director of international activities. Eck will begin his new role on May 1.

“The love of the American Quarter Horse was instilled in me at a young age by my aunt who bred, raised and trained them for the rodeo and show arenas. I was given the opportunity to take my gift of teaching and my love of the horse to an international level as a clinician for the AQHA Educational Marketplace,” said Eck. “During these trips to Europe, I witnessed a new enthusiasm and desire to learn about the Quarter Horse and our western heritage. Promoting the American Quarter Horse on an international scale will be an honor. I look forward to meeting and working with the international affiliates and advancing AQHA into the future.”

As the director of international activities, Eck will be responsible for AQHA’s international member support by providing activities of value to the international membership through partnerships with AQHA international affiliates, U. S. Livestock Genetics Export (USLGE)/United States Department of Agriculture cooperator contract and programs sponsored through AQHA, such as Educational Marketplace. He will oversee policies and procedure

s to provide an overall direction of AQHA’s international affairs. Additionally, Eck will assist with maintaining and advancing AQHA’s international market by continuously examining, locating and developing international business relationships.

“We are proud to have Tate on board to serve our international members and their American Quarter Horses,” said Karl Stressman, AQHA chief executive officer. “He brings a broad skillset to the table alongside a long history of equine knowledge, and understands where our international members are coming from. We do business in over 90 countries and serve approximately 31,000 members and 440,000 registered American Quarter Horses and our goal is to provide more services to more members worldwide.”

Eck will lead an enthusiastic team that serves international affiliates and members, serve as the staff liaison for the AQHA International Committee, organize international events and travel internationally.

Eck received a master’s degree in agriculture education from North Dakota State University and also served as an equine science instructor at NDSU for 15 years. Eck brings over 30 years of experience in equine management and training. He is an avid supporter of AQHA and held multiple professional titles, such as the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association faculty president and is an AQHA Professional Horseman.
