I am honored to have been elected President of the Canadian Quarter Horse Association at our recent Board of Directors’ Meeting held in conjunction with the AQHA convention in Las Vegas. In the process of reviewing all the involvements of the CQHA in an effort to “get up to speed” in my new position, I have a whole new appreciation for all the work that our immediate Past-Presidents, Haidee Landry and Marnie Somers, have done to lead and build our association to the level it is today. They deserve our thanks and congratulations of a job very well done. I would also like to welcome the new members to our Board of Directors, Myrna Anderson (AB), Susan Chestnut (NB), John Perkins (NB), and Mary Ellen Robinson (AB). I can see already we are benefiting from their new perspective and ideas.
The CQHA is the umbrella affiliate of the AQHA for all the Canadian provincial affiliates and serve to coordinate and promote Quarter Horse activities on a national basis. Annually, the CQHA contributes grant funding to Provincial AQHA and Alliance Affiliates to help them promote and produce industry growth initiatives and events. There have been Battle of the Breeds competitions, trade fair promotions, CRI Reinings, Para Reinings, Versatility Ranch Horse competitions, entry-level shows and classes, AQHA Special Events and more. The CQHA is also an active member of Equine Canada, which is the official voice for the entire equine industry in Canada.
I would encourage everyone in Canada who own Quarter Horses, or who just like them, to join the CQHA. Click here for the benefits of membership. Membership is FREE for all current members of the AQHA and $10 for a CQHA direct membership, if you are not a current member of the AQHA. You can also review all the activities and events of the entire CQHA. One of our new services is the Event Calendar under Affiliates/Events where you can click on the date and have it added to your personal calendar. Two other sources of information that will help everyone to keep up with the happenings of the CQHA are our Facebook page (Canadian Quarter Horse Association) and our official publication, “The Rider” newspaper (click here to subscribe).
With our new website we’re now accepting site-wide rotating banner advertising opportunities from businesses, and a dedicated webpage for stallion owners’ ads. If you have an equine related business, or have a stallion to promote, please check out our online Ad Rate Sheets webpage.
One of my top priorities as President of the CQHA is the health and well-being of the Quarter Horse and continuing to put our horse first. Animal welfare and the optics of it have become the biggest concern we face in the horse industry. I look forward to producing and publishing two documents, a biosecurity protocol for all Quarter Horse activities and a medication control guidelines brochure for Quarter Horse competitions. Also, I am currently serving on the Stud Book and Registration Committee of the AQHA and will do my best to preserve the integrity and quality of the Quarter Horse breed.
The CQHA is always interested in hearing about issues that concern Quarter Horse people everywhere; any feedback you wish to share would be welcome. Let us know if there is anything we can add or do to the website to make it better. Click here to email me .
Enjoy your horses and have a great riding season,
CQHA President, Wayne Burwash, DVM
